I am sure that you’ll get surprised by the fact that this gorgeous breed comes in many sizes.
French bulldog size facts
Despite the fact that French bulldogs posses oversized personalities, their bodies are actually small. If we take a look at their history, we will realize that their ancestors (English bulldogs) much affected the size of quondam Frenchies. They also had longer muzzles and breathed easier.
The Frenchie was created by crossbreeding the English bulldog and other terrier breeds. The erected, bat-looking ears present their main trademark as well as compact and short bodies.
When we talk about the French bulldog size that is approved by the AKC, their weight should not exceed 28 pounds. Male Frenchies usually weight between 20-28 pounds and females between 16-24 pounds. The height of both females and males goes between 28-30 cm.
Micro, teacup and mini French bulldog size
In the last few years, we have become witnesses of mini-sized dogs’ growing popularity. Mini, micro and teacup Frenchies find their places in homes all over the world. In order to produce small-sized Frenchies, breeders choose one of the following ways for producing them.
- Breeding from runts can be one of the ways. A runt presents the smallest puppy from the litter. Of course, this requires that the puppy is completely healthy and that has a great health history.
- Another type of getting a mini or a micro Frenchie is to crossbreed it with another smaller terrier breed. They are otherwise called hybrid dogs and are not considered for purebred. In order to escape potential health issues, dog breeders often choose healthies breeds with elongated muzzles.
- The third type requires cultivating the genetic mutation for canine dwarfism. This type is not considered for a healthy way of breeding, so every future Frenchie owner needs to avoid buying such a dog.
Here is the size chart of a teacup, micro, mini and standard French bulldog:
Teacup French bulldog can weight between 10-14 pounds and can exceed the height of 11-12 inches.
Micro French bulldog can weight between 15-20 pounds, while their height ranges between 12-13 inches.
Mini Frenchies weight between 2-25 pounds, and can exceed the height of 13.5- 14 inches.
Standard sized Frenchies weight between 26-31 pounds. The weight over 28 pounds is considered for obesity. In order to check if your French bulldog is overweight, I recommend you to read the following article.
